Day of Silence: Friday, April 25th, 2008

March 21, 2008
Day of Silence is a national youth movement protesting the silence faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their allies. People are deliberately silent for the day to echo that silence, which is caused by harassment, prejudice and discrimination. Ending the silence is the first step toward fighting these injustices.
Founded in 1996, the Day of Silence® has become the largest single student-led action towards creating safer schools for all, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. From the first-ever Day of Silence® at the University of Virginia in 1996, to the organizing efforts in over 1,900 middle schools, high schools, colleges and universities across the country in 2002, its textured history reflects its diversity in both numbers and reach.

www.gladni.org

Three members of the Society went along to GLAD’s (Gay and Lesbian Across Down) 1st birthday party at Betty Blacks in Bangor this Monday, the 10th of March.

Many important people also attended including the mayor and representatives from the police and GPA (Gay Police Association). It was a fabulous event with supper, cake, a quiz and a local band helped by sponsorship from the DPP (District Policing Partnerships).

We were very excited to show our support for GLAD and if you’d like to find out more about their group you can visit their website www.gladni.org

March 7, 2008
Open Your Mind Logo

As some of you may be aware, NUS-USI is currently running a campaign called ‘Open Your Mind’. The project aims to:

  • Promote awareness of mental health issues amongst students aged 16-25 across Northern Ireland
  • Reduce the risk factors related to mental illness through awareness raising
  • Overcome the stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness
However, they need your help! It would be greatly appreciated if you could fill out a survey. It won’t take long, and you could win £100!
You can find the survey here.
And while you’re at it, you can become Open Your Mind’s Bebo and Facebook friends!
Thanks for your help.
