National Survey, Have Your Say!

October 21, 2008

From NUS

In the first national survey of its kind, Equality Challenge Unit has commissioned research into the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGB&T) staff and students in higher education.

Led by Professor Gill Valentine, Professor Paul Plummer and Dr. Nichola Wood from the University of Leeds, the research will identify any barriers or other issues specifically affecting LGB&T staff and students. The research findings, due to be published in March 2009, will establish whether the higher education sector needs to take further action to engage with and support these groups.

You can have your say by visiting equalsurvey.co.uk and also enter the competition to be in with a chance of winning an MP3 player.

Action on Homophobic Bullying says Balls

October 16, 2008

Labour re-affirm their commitment to LGBT rights as Ed Balls, Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, promises to further tackle homophobic bullying in schools.

From Labour LGBT

In his conference speech, ED Balls said, “No child should be bullied or held back because of their race, their disability or their sexuality,” he said.

Just to remind those of you thinking David Cameron’s conservative government makes more sense, here’s what a Conservative MPs in previous years have said when Labour brought in more gay friendly policies into schools:

From Pink News

Conservative MP Philip Davies described recommendations such as clamping down on homophobic language in schools and running gay awareness campaigns as “barmy, politically correct nonsense.”

He told The Sun that it would, “brainwash kids.”

“Schools should concentrate on teaching children the 3Rs,” he said.

At least Ed Balls offers the LGBT community a shred of hope.

US celebs tell teens to stop saying “That’s so gay”

October 14, 2008

As our first Activist Meeting is coming up this Thursday 16th Oct (8pm Club Room 1 Student’s Union) we’ve been looking around for inspiration from other campaigns. Pink News have reported this one, a major initiative across 33,000 media stations in the USA with celebrities such as Hilary Duff and Wanda Sykes.

From Pink News

A new campaign that aims to raise awareness among straight teenagers about the consequences of homophobic language in American schools has been launched.

Which continues

Homophobic remarks such as “that’s so gay” are the most commonly heard type of biased remarks in US schools.

Research shows that these slurs are often unintentional and are a part of teens’ vernacular.

Most do not recognise the consequences, but the casual use of this language often carries over into more overt harassment.

Certainly some interesting materials and ideas can also be found on the website www.ThinkB4YouSpeak.com
