We get asked a lot of questions, here are some of the most frequent but if yours isn’t here then please don’t hesitate to send us a quick email – site@qublgbt.org.uk
What do you do at your meetings?
· We have guest speakers from the local LGBT community inform us on what they do and what they can do for us.
· Monthly fun social/team building events such as bowling, Indiana Land and the cinema.
· Social evenings at the local gay clubs such as kremlin, Mynt and Union Street.
· Regular Coffee Afternoons, to relax and chat on Wednesday afternoons.
· Activism meetings to discuss issues and create campaigns.
· Have a laugh. The society’s main aim is just to have fun and make new friends!
Who goes to the Meetings?
- Undergraduates on all courses. Our society is unique in that it attracts people with polemic academic and social interests. Get to meet varied and interesting new people.
- Staff, Postgraduate, Mature and Part-Time Students. It’s difficult integrating in with the younger crowd but we’re a fun and accepting society, come and have a chat and chill on a Wednesday afternoon, learn about the local LGBT community through our Meetings with Guest Speakers and enjoy a tipple in the local bars. Help on our campaigns at the Activism meetings we need a lot of ideas and commitment to achieve a successful presence in the Union and reduce basic prejudices like homophobia. The society needs the influence of its members with ‘life experience’ and big kids alike.
Do I have to be out?
Absolutely not. We don’t judge, we’re just here to make friends with you, as a person. You can be out to everyone or no one, we’re all in the same boat and we want to make it as easy as possible to let you get the best out of the society.
Is it confidential?
We treat your confidentiality with upmost importance. We meet in a room which is secure and has a ‘meeting in progress, please do not disturb’ sign on the door. No member of our executive will acknowledge yourself around campus if you don’t want them to (for those times when you’re with THAT group of friends you’d rather didn’t know you’re LGBT) Permission is asked for any photographic material on our Bebo and Website. Anything we can do to make life easier for you, that’s in our power, we’ll do basically!
I’m unsure about coming to my first meeting, can you help?
Yes. Firstly remember that we’ve ALL been there. Our current executive team has sat there, in your seat during their first meeting, bricking it. It does take a lot of personal strength to step through the door and we sincerely understand this. For most people it will be the first time ever that they’ve told anyone they’re LGBT or met people who similarly identify as LGBT. The strongest thing to emphasize is the genuinely friendly atmosphere amongst the society members, we stick together and appreciate people for everything they are, not just a label and a student number! If you’d like to talk to one of our members to make you feel more secure or meet with us before a meeting just request a buddy meeting by sending an email to site@qublgbt.org.uk
Im not sure I’m LGBT/I don’t identity as LGBT, can I still come along?
Yes. As long as you’re respectful of other people’s diverse identities you’re welcome to attend any meeting. University is the perfect time to begin to find out who you are, who you’re attracted to and how you identify; come along, make some friends and learn something new about the LGBT community. We need our Heterosexual friends to help make a difference in the Union. Bigotry is is always present, help us to change the way homosexuality is represented, help us reduce homophobia and hate crime.
Why do you charge a membership fee?
The more members we get, the more funding we receive from the university. Also if you’re a paid up member then you qualify to receive up to 75% off some excursions, like our annual xmas trip and pink training.
